Street Heat, a band based in Louisville, Ky., has been performing shows for 15 years at schools and other venues across Kentucky. But they’re not your typical rock band. The members are full-time police officers, sheriff’s deputies, correctional officers and firefighters who volunteer their time, and they use music to reach kids with messages about resisting drugs, avoiding violence, dealing with peer pressure and believing in themselves. And they perform in their uniforms! Street Heat works to stay current on music popular with kids. Their song list includes tunes on the pop charts, some rap, a bit of country and even a few classic oldies.

Sunset Beach Salute

In December 1941, Marvin Hume learned that 2 of his childhood friends had been killed during the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Filled with pain, Marvin entered the military. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years and, during his missions, saw unforgettable images of death and destruction.

Marvin, who’s in his 80s now, doesn't talk much about those World War II images, but they’re at the heart of a memorial ceremony he’s conducted for over 30 years just outside a small beachside resort in New Jersey. It's a daily flag ceremony (from May--October) on Sunset Beach to honor the sacrifices of our nation's veterans.

Fifteen minutes before sunset, he stands at the base of a flagpole on Sunset Beach, alongside a family that wishes to honor a deceased loved one who served in the military. Marvin plays God Bless America and The Star-Spangled Banner over a loudspeaker system, and then helps members of the family lower the American flag while Taps is played.

Laptops for the Wounded

Laura Brown, a mother whose son who fought in Iraq, is trying to improve conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center…one laptop computer at a time.

A few years ago, Laura was chatting online with the mother of a wounded soldier, and the mother mentioned that she had to print out her son's e-mails and take them to him at the hospital because there weren't enough laptops to go around.

Laura, whose own son had recently returned safely from the war, thought the solution to the problem seemed easy, so she formed a group, Laptops for the Wounded, to raise money for the cause.

Since its fundraising effort began in November 2005, Laura's organization has donated almost 40 computers to military hospitals around the country…with the majority of them going to Walter Reed in Washington D.C.

Mike Herman has been with Campus Crusade for Christ for 15 years, and he recently founded the Compton United Soccer Club. 2. Hidden Harvest

Christy Porter has brought back the ancient practice of gleaning. Through her Hiddden Harvest organization, workers collect what's left behind after the harvest. 1. Talking Parrot

When a little African Grey parrot flew out of his cage in Tokyo recently, the police found him on a rooftop and sent him to a veterinary hospital while they searched for clues as to his owner. The parrot had kept quiet with the cops, but he told the vet his full name--"Mr. Yosuke Nakamura"--and address! Mr. Nakamura is now home with his family. :-)

2. The Mowing Mailman

3. Drew's Big Birthday Give

4. Running Club for the Homeless

Anne Mahlum started a running club for the homeless, after jogging past a shelter day after day and passing a bunch of homeless men just standing around outside. 1. Luxury Tax

Pastor Jeff Wenke and the Journey Church in San Jose, CA developed a fun way to support World Vision in AIDS-devastaed Limpopo, Zimbabwe! Inspired by the Monopoly board game, they printed up Luxury Tax cards and taxed themselves for "luxuries" like running water, cell phones, and even nights out on the town- things that people in Limpopo can only dream about. They raised over $25,000 in one month and sponsored 100 World Vision children!

2. Warm Hands

911 operator Toni Dukes found a way to warm the hands- and hearts- of San Francisco's homeless. 1. Marty and Adele

Adele is a one-of-a-kind service dog! She helps her owner, Marty Harris, by alerting her before she suffers symptoms of a chronic fainting disorder. Adele cues Marty with a gentle nudge or even sitting on her lap, allowing Marty to literally sit out symptoms caused by an irregular heartbeat. Since Adele joined her life in 2006, Marty has only fainted once- and only because she ignored Adele's wise warning! Adele is trained to help with small tasks, and here she is picking up the phone.

2. Kennedy's Kisses for Kaeden

Kennedy was six years old when her brother, Kaeden, was born with heart defects that required multiple surgeries. When it was time to celebrate his first birthday, Kennedy suggested that they collect donations for the Penn State Children's Hospital instead of gifts. The response was overwhelming, and Kennedy kept going! She recruited friends and began Kisses for Kaeden, an organization that has now raised raised over $40,000 so far for a variety of nonprofit organizations.

3. Laptops for the Wounded

Military mom Laura Brown discovered a challenge- many recovering soldiers are unable to communicate freely with their families due to technological limitations. Laura began "Laptops for the Wounded" to provide laptop computers to these soldiers while they are in the hospital. So far, they've provided forty computers to military hospitals around the country. Wounded soldiers can now communicate by email and even use webcams to see family members.

4. The Rose Man

85-year-old Willard Campbell loves to grow roses, but what he loves most is giving them away. Every week he blesses hospital and nursing home patients with the flowers- about 25,000 roses a year.

1. Yard Duty in Tustin

Community members come together to lend a hand to a neighbor in need. After Mike Mullen's wife was diagnosed with cancer, Mike neglected everyday business, like yard work and home maintenance, in order to focus on her care. Sadly, Mike lost his wife after 8 years of battling the disease. When neighbors, church members, and even local boy scouts noticed that his yard needed work, they stepped up to provide the caring, helping hand.

2. Honoring His Fallen Son

61-year-old Bill Krissoff enlisted as a lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserves medical corps in honor of his son, Nathan, a Marine who lost his life while serving in Iraq. 3. Night Alarm

The family cat wouldn't let Abby Shaw sleep! After many midnight annoyances, Abby found out she had sleep apnea. Maggie, the cat, woke her up whenever she stopped breathing. Thanks to this feline alert, Abby is getting treatment- still under Maggie's watchful eye.

4. Nicolai Reaches the Top

13-year-old Nicolai wanted to raise money to send wheelchairs to the disabled in Tanzania. He decided to be creative and do it by climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro! However, Nicolai is also disabled- he was born with a right leg. People sponsored pennies for every foot of his climb- an amazing climb to 19,340 feet on crutches. Nicolai raised $75,000 for Free Wheelchair Mission- providing over 1,000 wheelchairs!

A wife's act of kindness grows into a Christmas tradition and changes an entire family. Nancy gave an inner-city student wrestling team new equipment in her husband's name. Then she explained this to her husband in a letter placed in a white envelope on the Christmas tree. Her alternative gift reignited his Christmas joy and inspired a new family tradition.

3. WHITE ENVELOPE PART 2

Another family read about the white envelope and started their own tradition of giving. This grew into a website and organization that continues to spread the gift of love.

Alena Strickland, Super Mom

We were blessed to spend some time with Alena Strickland and her family!

You might remember Alena from a previous From the Heart segment. She has made over 112 special needs foster kids part of her family for more than twenty years. She's also adopted six of those kids and become legal guardian to two others, in addition to her three biological children. And if a full house wasn't enough to keep this family busy, Alena works with Child Share, an organization that works with foster families and children in need.

Students from kindergarten through high school put their hands and hearts together to make Valentine's Day a true day of love. 3. No-Email Friday!

Tres, Mike, and Beth- different kind of heroes

Tonight's stories feature special individuals who are changing lives in unique ways.

1. Tres
Tres was rescued from severe abuse to recover and learn to live with only three legs. As if that weren't enough to keep a dog busy, Tres also became a licensed therapy dog! Now he helps hospitalized children, prisoners, and even other abandoned huskies. His owner, Scott, has more information on his website, http://www.scottski.net/.

2. Mike's Handcarved Canes
When Mike Hunter received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, it progressed quickly. He needed a cane to get around, but couldn't find anything that worked for him. So he carved his own! Now he's donated over 300 handcarved canes to improve life for other patients.

3. Camp Eureka

Meet Beth!

Beth Underwood had an illness as well- glaucoma that left her blind. Instead of allowing it to be a hinderance, Beth combined her experience with her love for outdoor education. She now operates Camp Eureka, a camp for blind children. The kids have an opportunity to experience nature, as well as learn from mentors who are also sight-impaired. Want to know more? 4. Inner City Slickers
Another very unique camp is closer to home in Agua Dulce, CA. Michael McMeel created a place where inner city kids could discover Old West values- perseverance, courage, responsibility, respect, kindness, and hard work. Tails of Hope and Things to Come

We've gotten some inquiries regarding a past story about Tails of Hope, an organization that finds homes for pets with terminally ill owners. Kelly Moyer founded Illinois-based Tails of Hope five years ago when her own father lost his fight with cancer and needed a new home for his cat.
